Bamboo bowls for home sustainability

As more people aim to live sustainably, we carefully curate our homes with eco-friendly products that align with our values without sacrificing joy or beauty. This mindset guided my decision to incorporate handmade bamboo bowls into my daily rituals. These humble yet captivating vessels allow me to make a small positive impact while heightening the meaning of ordinary moments shared with loved ones.

While “sustainability” has become a buzzword, its essence is simple - meeting our current needs without compromising future generations. A sustainable home minimizes environmental harm through mindful choices: non-toxic building materials, energy efficiency, conservation habits, and nature-derived products like my beloved bamboo bowls.

Beyond benefiting the planet, surrounding myself with items that reflect my ideals brings me peace. My bowls infuse sustainability into the heart of my home - the kitchen - as I prepare and share meals with gratitude and presence. Their warm, organic beauty contrasts the cold impersonality of plastic ware. I feel hopeful seeing these small changes ripple through my community as others also opt for handmade over disposable goods.

A sustainable source

Bamboo itself helps restore my faith in nature’s brilliance. As a highly renewable grass, bamboo regenerates rapidly after harvesting from its intact root structure. New shoots rocket skyward at up to 3 feet per day! Compare this to slow-growing trees requiring decades to mature and aggressive cotton cultivation dependent on pesticides. Bamboo thrives sustainably with minimal intervention.

This ancient grass also gives back - releasing over 30% more oxygen than an equivalent forest area. Its natural antibacterial agent prevents microbes from cultivating, eliminating the need for toxic disinfecting chemicals. Processing methods avoid harmful bleaches or dyes, retaining bamboo’s comforting, familiar essence.

What is home sustainability?

Home sustainability means creating a home that has the least possible negative impact on our environment. The good news is that a sustainable home should be energy efficient and cheaper to run. Generally speaking, when people talk about home sustainability, they focus on:

  • Building materials and methods

  • Decorating choices

  • Insulation

  • Windows

  • Heat, ventilation and air conditioning

  • Lighting

  • Appliances

  • Plumbing fixtures

  • Use of smart systems

  • Energy generation from solar and wind

  • Your habits when it comes to regular maintenance, conservation and green cleaning

Did you know that sustainability does not need to stop at the materials your home is made from. It can be carried into the products you use in your home including your serving ware. By choosing products that are made from sustainable materials like bamboo, you are enhancing your home’s sustainability rating

Choose your bamboo bowls with care

The truth is when it comes choosing products for home sustainability, there are other factors to consider including food safety and manufacturing processes. The bamboo bowls we sell at Whidbey Island Provisions have been handmade by artisans employed by our partner in Vietnam. This is not a mass-produced product. The bamboo is lovingly molded into bowls by hand by artisans with generational expertise over the course of a few days. Once the bowls are dry, they are coated with high gloss (Gloss Bowls) or matt (Scandi Bowls) Lacquer.

What is critically important is that not only are our bowls made from a sustainable material, but they are completely food safe. The lacquer is manufactured in Europe and adheres to German, European and American food safety guidelines and laws and are regularly tested by TÜV Rheinland.

This means that our bowls do not contain:

  • Melamine

  • Plastics

  • Formaldehyde

  • Chemicals that pose a health risk

You can feel secure knowing that you are serving food to your friends and family in a product that is kind to the planet and to people.
